The north-coast road runs from São Tomé city through Guadalupe, Neves and Santa Catarina. The surface is generally good as far as Guadalupe, then becomes progressively rougher as the road continues around the island.

A compact 4x4 such as the Daihatsu Terios is a practical choice for the northern route. It is easy to manoeuvre in the city while providing useful clearance for damaged roads and access tracks. The Suzuki Jimny is another compact option for travellers who prioritise off-road ability over luggage space.

Choose a capable 4x4 if you plan to drive south beyond São João dos Angolares towards Malanza, Porto Alegre, Praia Jalé or Praia Inhame.

The southern road becomes narrower and rougher as it approaches the palm-oil plantations and the far south. Expect potholes, uneven surfaces and sections that become more difficult after heavy rain. Journey times are often longer than the distance shown on a map suggests.

A Toyota Prado provides additional space and comfort for families or groups travelling south. The Toyota Hilux is suited to rougher journeys when you need a pickup deck for luggage, surfboards or equipment. Smaller groups may prefer the Suzuki Jimny when luggage space is less important.

Many of São Tomé’s beaches, waterfalls, plantations and viewpoints are reached using secondary roads or unpaved tracks. Access conditions can include mud, steep gradients, deep potholes and loose surfaces.

A 4x4 provides better traction and ground clearance, but it does not make every road safe. Drive slowly, avoid unfamiliar tracks after severe rain and ask for current local advice before leaving the main road.
